ODIM Brooke Ocean receives ODIM LOPC order from the University of New South Wales
The ODIM LOPC will be used by a consortium led by Prof. Iain Suthers and involving University of Queensland, University of Technology, Sydney and the University of Tasmania, for measuring detailed size and shape outlines of zooplankton for marine and fisheries research in the East Australian Current and Tasman Sea, the Coral Sea, the Southern Ocean and Antarctica, as well as in many estuaries. Marine ecosystems are dramatically changing in the region, where Tasmanian waters have warmed by more than 20C in 70 years, due to the increasing flow of the East Australian Current.One ODIM LOPC will be mounted on a towed body operated by the CSIRO Division of Marine Research and onto a 1m2 multiple opening-closing net. It will also be deployed in an estuary and mounted on a pole from the transom of a small open boat. The second ODIM LOPC will be implemented as a turn-key laboratory circulation system in order to analyze both discrete and online (continuous) samples.
The ODIM LOPC is the next generation in plankton profiling. The LOPC’s high speed processing and improved detection plane provides detection counts at higher resolutions and higher concentrations with lower coincidence. The system can be installed on various towbody scenarios as well as on the ODIM MVPTM multi sensor free fall fish, enabling vertical real-time water column profiling while underway at speeds up to 12 knots.
