Dry well near the Troll field in the North Sea

2011.02.03 - Field Development

Wintershall Norge ASA, operator of production licence 378, has completed the drilling of wildcat well 35/12-3 S.

The well was drilled about 115 kilometres north-northwest of Bergen and about 15 kilometres north of the Troll field.

The purpose of the well was to prove petroleum in Upper and Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks (Sognefjord and Fensfjord formations and the Brent group).

The well encountered the Sognefjord and Fensfjord formations as well as the Brent group with good reservoir quality, but the well was dry. Extensive data acquisition and sampling have been carried out.

The well is the second exploration well in production licence 378, which was awarded in APA 2005.

The well was drilled to a vertical depth of 2729 metres below the sea surface, and was terminated in the Etive formation in the Brent group from the Middle Jurassic Age.

The water depth at the site is 352 metres. The well has now been permanently plugged and abandoned.

Well 35/12-3 S was drilled by the Songa Delta drilling facility, which will now proceed to production licence 434 in the Norwegian Sea to drill wildcat well 6507/8-8, where Nexen Exploration Norge AS is the operator.
