Dry well south of the Snøhvit field in the Barents Sea

2011.02.18 - Field Development

Statoil Petroleum AS, operator of production licence 488, has completed the drilling of wildcat well 7119/12-4.

The well was drilled about 145 kilometres northwest of Hammerfest and about 40 kilometres south of the 7120/8-1 Askeladd gas deposit, which is part of the Snøhvit development.

The objective of the well was to prove petroleum in Middle Jurassic reservoir rocks (the Stø formation). The Snadd formation from the Late Triassic Age was the secondary exploration target, but was not reached.

Reservoir rocks of good quality were encountered in the Stø formation. Data acquisition and sampling have been carried out. The well is dry.

This is the first exploration well in production licence 488. The licence was awarded in APA 2007.

The well was drilled to a vertical depth of 2887 metres below the sea surface, and was terminated 150 m into the Fruholmen formation in the Upper Triassic. The water depth at the site is 192 metres. The well has now been permanently plugged and abandoned.

Well 7119/12-4 was drilled by the Polar Pioneer  drilling facility, which will now proceed to production licence 532 in the Barents Sea to drill wildcat well 7220/8-1, where Statoil Petroleum AS is the operator.
