Petrobras makes important Gas discovery in the Santos Basin

2009.01.27 - Field Development

The Consortium formed by Petrobras (63% - Operator) and Repsol (37%) to explore Block BM-S-7, announces that the drilling of well 6-BRSA-661-SPS (6-SPS-53), located in shallow Waters in the southern portion of the Santos Basin, State of São Paulo, proved the presence of a thick column of gas in reservoirs above the salt layer.

The well is located some 210 km southeast of the city of Santos, off the coast of the State of São Paulo, where water depth is 214 meters. Drilling the well is part of the exploratory activities for the Assessment Plan of well 1-BSS-68, as approved by the NPA, which had determined the presence of gas in sandy reservoirs in the post-salt section.

The discovery was confirmed via tests carried out in reservoirs located as of a depth of 3970 meters.

The Consortium will give continuity to the exploratory activities by means of formation tests to be carried out in the gas intervals that have already been discovered. After that, it will be possible to declare the field’s commerciability.

This discovery is very important due to the potential to produce gas in shallow waters in the southern portion of the Santos Basin.
