A new performance standard for critical offshore operations will help North Sea oil and gas drilling operators comply with tough new environmental requirements, Castrol Offshore said today. The range of the UK Offshore Chemical Notification scheme is being extended from 1st January 2009 to include all greases used to lubricate jack-up open gearing - that raise and lower platforms from and into the sea. Alve is a smaller gas and condensate discovery in the Norwegian Sea, 16 kilometres southwest of the Norne field. The field was proven in 1990. The production from Alve will be phased in to the Norne field (illustration), and scheduled start-up is early in 2009. Full text

On 1-3 December, Uruguay Energy Ministry and ANCAP, the National Oil Company, will launch the offshore licensing round for exploration and exploitation of gas and oil. The blocks on offer, lie in the Punta del Este and Pelotas basins, where water depths range from 50 to 1500 meters, as well as another basin further offshore called Oriental Del Plata. The blocks’ areas range from 2,500 to 10,000 square kilometers. Full text
