EMGS complete 30 block electromagnetic survey in the Barents Sea

2008.08.15 - Projects

Electromagnetic Geoservices (EMGS) has completed the world's largest multi-client electromagnetic (EM) survey in the Barents Sea, ahead of Norway's 20th exploration licensing round.

The survey area, at more than 9000 km2 and covering 30 blocks, includes all the Barents Sea acreage in the licensing round.

Terje Eidesmo, EMGS chief executive commented: "The program has been heavily pre-funded and has generated a great deal of interest. We are excited by the results, which reveal valuable information related to the prospectivity of the survey areas. The EM data will give potential bidders a competitive advantage during the licensing round, and will help them to target their exploration resources more effectively."

The service on offer is Clearplay Find, which is a further development of the service previously referred to as 3D scanning. Clearplay Find data is acquired using 3-km-sampled, wide-azimuth 3D EM grids.

"EM data resulting from Clearplay Find is rapidly obtained and provides good, early indications of hydrocarbons and prospectivity. Exploration professionals now have a means for rapidly identifying leads and assessing new licence blocks more accurately than previously possible, before bidding or committing significant resources to new ventures," continued Eidesmo.

Clearplay Find offers the display of EM data as maps and 3D volumes and is easily integrated with seismic information and geological models. Combining EM techniques with conventional methods gives explorationists a clearer and more complete understanding of the subsurface.
