Shell and PGS today announced a collaboration to develop an ultra-high channel count fiber-optic seismic sensing system. Higher channel counts with high quality sensors recover more seismic energy and help cancel noise. The improved resolution and imaging translate into better exploration decisions. Full text

The semi-submersible platform by Aker Solutions for the Gjøa oil and gas field offshore Norway, today started on its journey from the yard at Stord to the North Sea, where installation will take place. Production start-up is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2010. Full text

Seadrill today took delivery of the new deepwater semi-submersible drilling rig West Orion from the Jurong Shipyard in Singapore. The unit was delivered on budget and 10 days ahead of original delivery schedule. The drilling rig will leave Singapore tomorrow, en route to its first six-year drilling assignment for Petrobras offshore Brazil. Commencement of operations is expected at the end of July. Full text

Chevron U.S.A. Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX), today announced that it has commenced operations on the Discoverer Inspiration, an ultra-deepwater drillship, in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. The vessel has the capability to drill wells in 12,000 feet (3,650 meters) of water to a total depth of 40,000 feet (12,200 meters). Full text

First oil production has commenced ahead of schedule from the BHP Billiton operated Pyrenees project, offshore Western Australia. The full project involves 13 subsea wells, an extensive subsea gathering system and a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) facility, with production capacity of approximately 96,000 barrels of oil and gas reinjection capacity of 60 million cubic feet of gas per day (100 per cent basis). AGR Petroleum Services (AGR) will begin a significant drilling campaign, valued at more than £2 million, off the Falklands Islands this month on behalf of two operators. The company, which is one of the largest independent well management firms in the world, has been contracted by Desire Petroleum and Rockhopper Exploration Plc to provide logistical support and undertake a six well drilling programme in the North Falklands Basin.
