Deep-Blue Subsea keen to develop new umbilical and HIPPS technology

2008.03.02 - Technology

Deep-Blue Subsea Technology are looking at cost effective ways in which umbilical installation operations can be monitored. Also, qualification Testing of the Hy-Flo hydraulic HIPPS is due to be completed shortly. To date the tests have verified both the accuracy and reliability of this technology.

Long Flying Lead Strain and Bend Monitoring During Deployment

As part of a new initiative, Deep-Blue Subsea Technology are looking at cost effective ways in which umbilical installation operations can be monitored. Our objective will be to identify 'disposable' hardware,  low in cost, but capable of providing installation technicians with a comprehensive profiling and stress monitoring facility during deployment. This will allow deployment operations to take place where visibility is poor and, when used in combination with the EEC umbilical deployment system, provide the confidence to increase speed of long flying lead deployment in all conditions.

The build of the first deployment system looks set to take place during 2008, with interest from several potential users who have also expressed interest in providing funding for the project.

HIPPS Hardware Qualification Testing

Qualification Testing of the Hy-Flo hydraulic HIPPS started in September 2007 and is due to be completed in Q1 2008. To date the tests have verified both the accuracy and reliability of this technology. In addition to the hydraulic system, work has now stared on an electro-hydraulic subsea HIPPS control, using a combination of existing electronic, magnetic core based logic technology and hydraulic controls in a combined controls package. The hydraulic technology has been well received by a number of oil majors and four companies have provided funding for the development and qualification testing. Thanks to an innovative design at the core of this hydraulic control arrangement, this hydraulic control system will be capable of operating at up to 20,000 psi; this aligns well with the HP/HT demands of future developments.
